100 Tea Cups

Within my practice I focus on my own everyday life as a narrative along with non – precious objects in an attempt to bring an awareness of he over looked. I transform the ordinary into the extraordinary by bringing the void between the mundane and the wonderful closer. My project I need Your Cuppa was created with this ideology of transforming the mundane.

One person’s everyday life is different to the next; my project is an extension to this claim. During my documentation of my own everyday life, the mundane action of making a cup of tea seemed to make a constant repeated occurrence. I lead to the conclusion that this action is repeated within the everyday life of people around the world. To demonstrate the claim that each person’s everyday is different to the next, I set up a request asking for a single image documenting this action. Using posters, internet forums and group pages, my request was spread globally. I had over 100 responses from all corners of the Earth.

By gathering these images and showcases them side b side, I saw over 100 individual lives, each cup, each table setting, taken in different rooms with different variations of hot beverages. These subtle interchanging elements within these images show that people around the world, all enacting the same mundane action can produce such differences.

My installation plays homage to my findings. Each cup displayed is a representation of each individual that sent me an image. The domestic setting to which these cups are placed, is a symbol of the ordinary within my own everyday life. By adding the 100 tea cups I am visually representing the extraordinary moment in my life where 100 people from around the world took part within my art practice.
